Using a built-in air bag and rubber cushions, the Shocker Hitch Air gooseneck coupler acts like an air suspension between your truck and fifth-wheel. The air bag and bumpers help absorb road shock, creating a smoother, more comfortable ride while also protecting your truck and trailer from wear and tear on the brakes, chassis, trailer frame, and suspensions.
The body of the Shocker Hitch Air gooseneck coupler is designed to pivot back and forth, as the air bag and the cushioned bumpers take turns absorbing the road shock. When you hit a bump and your trailer bounces or you brake suddenly and your trailer jolts forward, the unit pivots so that the air bag and 2 cushioned bumper stops can isolate and absorb the energy.
Using the easily accessible air valve on the top of the unit, you can adjust the air pressure in the air bag to best accommodate what you're hauling. If you're towing a full trailer, for example, 15-20 psi should get the job done. If, however, you're hauling industrial equipment, you might need to air it up to 25-35 psi to accommodate the heavy load. Once the equipment is unloaded, simply release some air so that your unloaded trailer won't experience a stiff ride.
If you happen to get stuck in a situation where you're unable to inflate the bag, there's no need to worry; you can still tow your trailer. Without the inflated air bag, you won't get the full benefit from the Shocker Hitch Air, but you'll still get some built-in cushion with the bumper stops.
Hooking up your trailer is fast and easy thanks to the Shift Lock mechanism. Once you slide your gooseneck ball into the coupler socket, simply pull the lever down to engage the locking bars, securing the ball in place. Most couplers have a single pin that slides under one side of the ball, but the Shocker Hitch has thick, locking bars that cover both sides of the ball, providing added security and reducing rattle. Once the bars have captured your hitch ball, insert the included pin and clip through the lever to secure.
To unhook, remove the pin and clip and lift the lever to disengage the locking bars. You can even attach a pulley to the hole at the top of the lever, so you can easily release the lever from outside the bed of your truck.
